Wind Ensemble

The University of Hawai’i Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band at the University of Hawai’i. Comprised of the finest wind and percussion performers at the university, the Wind Ensemble explores cutting-edge repertoire as well as cornerstones of the wind literature in concerts through the entire academic year.
In previous years, the UH Wind Ensemble has toured throughout the continental US and abroad, and performed at such venues as the American Bandmasters Association (ABA) and the Western College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) conferences. Such distinguished guest artists as Rafael Mendez, Doc Severinsen, Evan Ziporyn, and Jimmy Borges have performed with the UH Wind Ensemble.
Under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Boeckman, the Wind Ensemble has embarked on an ambitious agenda of collaborations & residencies with major performers and composers, recording projects, chamber winds, and performance tours to our neighbor islands, the U.S. mainland, and the Pacific Rim. The Wind Ensemble serve as the host band for our biennial UH Conducting Workshop.

Symphonic Band

Conductor: Dr. Adam Kehl
Spring semester: MWF 2:30 – 3:45 PM in MB Room 108
The University of Hawai’i Symphonic Band consists primarily of undergraduate students from many different majors. The ensemble maintains a full instrumentation for the study and performance of the finest band standards and contemporary literature. The band performs at least two concerts per semester showcasing the high level of musicianship attained by the fifty-five performers comprising this ensemble. Auditions for the Symphonic Band are held once prior to the spring semester.

Fall Concert Band

This ensemble is OPEN to the entire University of Hawai’i System including community college, as well as community members, band directors, and band alumni!
The UH Fall Concert Band meets on Thursday evenings in the fall semester. The campus band typically performs one concert a semester.


Spring Concert Band
Conductor: Gwen H. Nakamura
The UH Concert Band meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during the Spring semester. The Concert Band is the largest of the UH Bands, and typically performs a concert each Spring at the Ala Moana Centerstage, which can be attended for free, as well as the UH Bands Aloha Concert.
UH Band Chamber Groups
The University of Hawai’i Bands Chamber Groups are the top wind and brass chamber ensembles at UH-Manoa. They rehearse, perform, and tour throughout Oahu and the Hawaiian Islands, working with our UH Music faculty and renowned visiting artists on a regular basis. Membership is open to new & returning undergrad & graduate UH-Manoa students in any major. Membership is by audition only, and renewable for up to four years.

Jazz Ensemble
Auditions Are Before the Start of Each Semester

The UH Manoa Jazz Ensemble consists primarily of undergraduate students from many different majors.The ensemble maintains a full instrumentation for the study and performance of the finest jazz and contemporary standards. Auditions for the Jazz Ensemble are held before the start of each semester. Please contact Dean Taba for information.
Through rehearsal and performance of a variety of carefully selected jazz ensemble literature, students will increase their knowledge and experience base with focus on professional outcomes and standards. All University of Hawai’i at Manōa students are eligible to enroll in the Jazz Ensemble pending approval of the director.
Ensemble placement and repertoire / part assignments are determined by the director and are intended to provide the most appropriate educational experience for each individual student’s development.
The University of Hawai’i Jazz Ensemble includes the traditional big-band orchestration:
5 Saxophones (2 Alto, 2 Tenor, 1 Bari)
4 Trombones (3 Tenor, 1 Bass)
4 Trumpets
3-5 Rhythm (Pno, Bass, Guitar, Drums, Aux Perc)
Additional membership/performers are at the director’s discretion.
